Maddy, born in 2005, is a multi-award-winning composer and instrumentalist, known for blending electronic sampling with acoustic sounds. A two-time winner of the BBC Young Composer Competition (2019 and 2021), Maddy’s work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and featured in a documentary about her composition, ‘simultaneous.’ Maddy’s two compositions for Rise: Past, Present and Future Talent explore the voice as an instrument of growth and transformation. Of her works, she says: “Both pieces are composed for choir but utilise the voice in different ways. ‘How Can I Sing Without Words?’ explores how harmony can evoke emotions without text, using dynamic crescendos and diminuendos, and different vowel sounds inspired by Meredith Monk. The second piece, ‘Wordsong,’ uses text from Walt Whitman and introduces a cello, symbolising Future Talent’s mission of helping musicians grow.” Her music’s rich textures and use of electronic elements, inspired by composers like Caroline Shaw, create an immersive sound world that reflects both personal and artistic development.
